Dessert Desert

Dessert Desert

You know when you were in elementary school learning to spell and your word for the day was dessert? I don’t know about you but my teacher always said stuff like “The difference between dessert and desert is that dessert has two s’s because you always want two desserts.”

Boy was she right.

Having two desserts, not deserts, is one big reason I got big! But getting healthy doesn’t have to mean a dessert desert, though desserts with mirage calories would be nice!

My favorite dessert right now is ice cream . . . NOT the way I used to, you know, by the pint, but by the serving. Oh and ice cream is great with strawberries or raspberries. There’s nothing wrong with eating ice cream, but try a scoop. Trust me, I have to chant that a lot when I’m indulging.

LJ’s Plan

LJ's Plan

So what’s my plan to go from 233 (I’ve already lost 7 pounds, yay for me!) to a healthy, toned young lady? The Plan is this:

1. Quit the soda. I’ve been off soda successfully for 72 days. Can you believe it? Me, a soda addict off of soda for good? In the past I’d have 4+ sodas every single day but on January 1st 2008I quit cold turkey and haven’t looked back. They say a person can lose 15 pounds by quitting soda alone!

2. Water. My goal is to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day, and 9 if I workout that day as you need more water to keep you hydrated and energized. So far I’m getting about 7-9 but I hope to always get 8 going forward. Previously I’d have 0-2 glasses of water a day. I know it’s crazy, but when did you think I was drinking the soda?

3. Fruit and veggies. I’m aiming for a total of 5 fruits and veggies a day. Of course the food pyramid wants me to have more but I’m striving for 5 right now. As with water I used to have 0-2 fruits and veggies a day. That’s like unheard of. So starting with a fruity breakfast and ending with a serving of veggies a day peppering the day with produce snacks has helped me get more and more in everyday.

4. Workouts! Eating healthy is GREAT and will get you far, but the real kicker is adding workouts to your healthy lifestyle. For me, an avid couch potato, 3 days of cardio and 2 days strength training will do. The combination of cardio and weight training is really important. Of course the cardio helps shed the fat (especially midsection fat I’ve read) but strength training builds muscle which builds up your metabolism and helps burn more calories when you work out.
5. The 5k. KJ and I are currently training for a 5k we plan to run walk in April. Every single Saturday, without fail, rain or SNOW we’ve been out there walking 3.2 miles. It might take us an hour (well 58 minutes) but we finish and we have so much fun. I actually look forward to waking up early on Saturdays and working my butt off now and that is incredibly unlike me.

This is my plan and these are my goals and I’m stickin’ to them!

Where to Start

Where to start

Where else to start but the beginning?

I’ve been overweight pretty much my whole life. I was always taller for my age in grade school, which is hilarious considering I’m barely 5 feet 3 inches now, and I guess the girls in my family just always developed faster than other girls. We were considered freaks for starting to fill out at 11 years old. What did I learn? Kids can be mean. Back then though I wasn’t really that large.

My family moved which lost me my friends caused me to quit sports which caused me to have nothing to do, which caused me to watch more TV which caused me to eat because I was bored which caused me to get overweight pretty fast. Like most people I’ve probably tried almost every single diet (there’s that four letter word again) and weight loss pill known to man. What did I get? Bupkis.

15 years later and nothing much has changed except the rising scale. . . until now. Starting at a weight of 241 in January I’m now down to 233. Not huge, 8 pounds, but it’s going down, and as we all know, slow and steady wins the race.

Have a Flabulous Birthday

It’s time to wish someone a Flabulous Birthday! Yep that’s right, it’s KJ’s birthday!

Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday dear KJ! Happy Birthday to you!

We already sort of celebrated with a healthy but delicious halibut dinner and a movie last night. She was SO good though. Being as it’s her birthday she did want a treat, but nothing that would kill all her progress. I got these mini gourmet cupcakes, a special Breakfast at Tiffany’s jeweled one special for her and they were flabulous.

Because they were mini cupcakes, they were perfect for the occasion, without going overboard!

So I just want to say how proud I am of you KJ! You are seriously an inspiration to all of us trying to get healthy.

Have a Flabulous Birthday KJ!

Diet is a four letter word

There are plenty of deliciously fun little four letter words in the English language, and while diet is a four letter word, it’s not one of the fun ones.

Diet. The word diet makes me cringe. And as many good people have said, anything with the word DIE in it isn’t something I want to do. I don’t want to die, I want to live. That’s why instead of going on a diet, I want to go on a live-it, you know a healthy lifestyle change that I can maintain forever.

What’s cool about my sister and I is that we are each doing different things to get healthy. I’m going unstructured with tweaks in my diet, focusing on portions, easing my way back into workout out and weighing in once a month. My sister KJ is going the more structured route with a weight loss program that is teaching her portion control, good combinations of foot to eat, easing her way into workout out and weighing in about 3 times a week. But we’ll expand on all that later.

We are both on similar but very different paths to weight loss but neither of us is on a diet and I think that’s what is going to make the difference in the long run. We aren’t just making good choices until we lose all the weight we want to lose and get to be the size we want to be and then go crazy again, we’re making healthy changes for life something that we can maintain forever. We are out to prove that whether it be a structured method or one you cook up yourself, it’s possible to get healthy. You just have to figure out which works for you!

As you can see the Flabulous Blog has been launched! But what is the Flabulous Blog? It’s a place where we explore what it’s like to be flabby but still fabulous, get it, flabulous? It doesn’t matter what size or shape you are, anyone can be fabulous and it’s all about how you look at yourself.

That being said, on the Flaboulous Blog my sister and I take you on our healthy lifestyle journeys, review health and fitness products and find fabulous deals on them, discuss the ups and downs of any “get healthy” lifestyle, random ramblings and hopefully even have some guest bloggers to give us different points of view on all things health and fabulocity.

We hope you enjoy!
